File Format

The following information has been made as simple as possible for those not familiar with file formats depending on their intended purpose...
A downloaded image.zip on ImageKingdom.com contains either a 72dpi* resolution graphic (suitable for the web) or a 300 dpi* resolution graphic (suitable for printing purposes) dependant on the file format that you use, as explained below.
All the formats available for download will work with raster imaging programs such as PaintShop Pro, PhotoShop, Picture It!, and Digital Image Pro. A vector program such as Illustrator or Freehand will be required to make any amends to the original .ai file. Files are zipped and are available for instant download when paid for by PayPal.

Sizes

All of the images are currently a standard 400 pixels (14cm) high, but the width may vary, depending on what the image is.

Formats

The images in the catalogue on ImageKingdom.com are shown with a border and a copyright watermark which is not present on the downloaded copy. Please ensure that you are selecting the correct file format that you need, dependant on the final use that you have intended for the graphic.

Gif – Graphic Interchange Format

An image format at 72dpi resolution, commonly used for images on the Web. GIFs are especially suitable for images composed of relatively few colors, such as logos or vector graphics. This format and resolution is undesirable for printing press purposes.

The images on ImageKingdom.com are saved using the highest 128 dithered setting with a transparent background.

JPEG (or JPG) – Joint Photographic Experts Group.

This is an image compression format usually recommended for photographs on the web because of its relatively high quality and low file size. It is known as a lossy compression, in that it deletes information from an image that it considers unnecessary. JPEG files can range from small amounts of lossless compression to large amounts of lossy compression, the data loss generated in its compression make it undesirable for printing purposes.

The jpgs on ImageKingdom.com are saved in RBG mode at the 'high quality' setting (progressive) at 72dpi with a white background.

PNG – Portable Network Graphics

A bitmapped graphics file format for use on the web which is becoming more accepted and more widely used because developments in browser capabilities makes it more accessible. It is expected to eventually replace the GIF format. PNG's compression is among the best of the formats that can be had for online use without losing image information. The images viewable in the catalogue on ImageKingdom.com are saved in this format, so as you see it on your monitor now, is what you will get.

The above illustrates an example of the various file formats suitable for the web mentioned previously with an image reduced to 150 pixels wide. You should be able to see the difference between the quality dependant on your monitor.

TIFF - Tagged Image File Format.

An image format that is supported by virtually all image and page-layout applications. Tiff files support RGB, CMYK and grayscale colour. The quality of the image is determined by its resolution or dpi. TIFF files are lossless, meaning the compression they apply to an image doesn't create artifacts that can degrade the appearance of the image. TIFF files are often used for archiving high quality versions of images, such as images intended to be reproduced in print.

The images for download using the tiff file format on ImageKingdom.com are saved to 300dpi in RGB mode and are suitable for printing purposes providing they are converted to the CMYK mode in a relevant graphics program beforehand. Please remember that the actual size is limited to 14cm high which will not lose quality on reduction. Requirements for printing much larger graphics (more than 3 times the actual size provided here) will require the original .ai file.

Original .ai (CS1) file.

Since vector graphics are not made of pixels (like the above file formats), they are therefore ideal for print design. Using the original .ai file in a vector program such as Adobe Illustrator means that the images can be scaled to large sizes in proportion without losing quality – for example, the image quality will look the same on a business card as it will on a billboard.

Free Sample Download

I have no intentions of selling graphics online where my potential customers have no idea of the quality that they are purchasing beforehand. Below, is of one of the first illustrations that I ever created in Illustrator. I have provided a free zipped sample download of all the file formats.
